Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits work side-by-side with Medicare. Meaning, you can have both Medicare and VA benefits simultaneously – you do not have to choose one or the other. However, Medicare and VA benefits do not work together, but rather Medicare helps to cover cost for care received at a Medicare-certified facility while VA benefits help to cover cost for care received at a VA facility. Medicare does not pay for any care received at a VA facility and vice versa.

If you qualify for VA benefits, you still may want to consider enrolling in Medicare Parts A and B when you turn 65 or otherwise become eligible for Medicare because it may provide you with medical coverage outside the VA health system.
