On Tuesday, December 23rd, the Obama administration reported 6.4 million people chose a health insurance plan or were re-enrolled in coverage through the federal insurance marketplace. It was reported that new health insurance coverage reported 1.9 million people or 30 percent of the total enrollments.
December 15th was the deadline to sign up for coverage to start on January 1, 2015, however, the open enrollment period will end on February 15, 2015.
Ms. Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the secretary of health and human services, who is currently in charge of the marketplace said, “This is an encouraging start,” Ms. Burwell said, but she added, “We still have a lot of work to do.”
The opportunity for open enrollment ends February 15, 2015 and approximately 85% of the people with health insurance coverage through the marketplace received federal subsidies. A subsidy is where the governement paid for a portion or all of their healthcare.
